Christmas 2013 and around here

Christmas was a low key affair around these parts. We went up to see S's grandmother Christmas morning, S's brother for an hour in the afternoon and then out to dinner Christmas night.

The highlight was definitely dinner and drinks. We ventured up to the O bar which is on the 47th floor of the Australia Square building. It is a slowly rotating bar, so during the hour and 45 minutes we were there we saw a full view of the city. It was really pretty and really quite romantic up there. We had a few cocktails each then headed (in the rain) to our dinner reservation at The Four Seasons restaurant - The Woods.
The menu was a la carte and there were about four options for each course. I didn't take any pictures of the food because I was too busy enjoying it, but let's just say it was delicious. I'll definitely be back to try more of their food.

Since then, we have mostly been lazing around the house. We were invited to a street party the other night and got home at 1:30am. A great bunch of people. The next morning Ted was really sick from a bone we'd (stupidly) given him. We ended up taking him to the vet as for the first time ever he refused food and water and he was really sluggish. He is home and fine now (no bones lodged in there anywhere) and our pockets are much lighter from the hefty vet bill.

I hope your Christmas season was lovely!

What did Rhi do on the weekend?

This past weekend was the first weekend S has had off study in three months. We used to that to our biggest advantage and saw a lot of people who probably felt neglected during our studies.
These boys!
Friday night M, T and baby H came over for dinner. Baby H is almost 6 months old and just divine. He is such a happy baby and a pleasure to be around. Also not great for my ovaries. I made a really delicious lasagne and even surprised myself at how good it was. If I had taken pics, I would do a recipe post - it was that good.

Saturday and Sunday were spent seeing family and hanging out at S's family farm. This could well be the last Summer we get to spend at the farm so we are soaking up the time the best we can. The pool is pretty glorious on a hot day like Sunday and most of the day was spent pool side. We also went to get the car cleaned and I felt so bad because it was so hot and those young guys looked wrecked.
I have had an alcoholic drink every day since the weekend and I am not even sorry. It is the season, after all.

In other totally exciting news, my best friend in the whole world got engaged on Sunday night and I could not be more excited for her and C. Congrats guys, you are a perfect couple!

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and thanks for reading this little blog here!

20 things you didn't know about me

  1. I google the end of movies while I am watching them
  2.   I am hilarious and cuddly and really friendly when I have had a few drinks.
  3.  I have only two pairs of heels. I am not a shoe person
  4. I often speak out loud what I think Teddy is thinking. In his ‘Teddy voice’.
  5.   I am a scrooge. I prefer to save money than spend it and I have successfully ‘trained’ a few people I know.
  6.   As soon as I walk through the door I put on gym gear even when I have no intentions of working out (95% of the time).
  7.   I look for new ways to better myself all the time. I don’t accept things as they are and often do my own research.
  8. My socks never match.
  9.   After S gets up in the morning (usually before me), I roll over to his side of the bed because it has ‘his’ warmth (I don’t even know how to explain that).
  10. My hands and feet swell after I eat carbs and when it is hot.
  11.  When I am nervous or upset, I can’t keep my hands still. S usually notices that before I do.
  12.  Sometimes I see what people spend their money on and wonder why? Until I remember that we all spend our money on the things WE like. Der.
  13.  I LOVE coffee. I am a coffee snob and I don’t care what people think of that.
  14.  I want babies and I don’t care if they come BEFORE marriage. I don’t care what people think of that, either (and no, I am not trying for a baby. I want babies but not just yet).
  15. I work in statistics. That is as exciting as it sounds...
  16.  Following on from the point above, if you knew me 10 years ago you would never have thought I would be now in this career. In fact, even I sometimes wonder how I did an economics degree and made it here.
  17. I long for a nicely decorated home and a thriving garden. But I am too lazy to action it. I always use the excuse that I’ll wait until I buy a house.
  18.  I don’t have a poker face. My expressions tell you exactly what I am thinking. I’ve had a few people call me out on the dirty looks I give when I disapprove. I don't mean to do it and hardly realise I am doing it.
  19.  I am the only person in my whole family (extended included) to attend and finish Uni.
  20.  In person I swear a lot.
Tell me; what don't I know about you?

What did Rhi do on the weekend?

Hello all!

Another weekend gone by and only one more until Christmas. I know most of you are excited, but I am not.
I spent another weekend around the house with little side trips out to do the grocery shopping, have drinks at a neighbour’s house and then more drinks with friends on Sunday afternoon.
Friday I had a work Christmas thing (just divisional). The only reason I am mentioning this is because I think the gift I gave my Kris Kringle was the best.
Saturday night our neighbour had a pre-Christmas get together. Her parties are always the most fun and most wild parties you have ever been too depending how much alcohol you consume. I decided to give my body a break from all the Christmas drinks I’d consumed and only had 2 drinks, so the night was early for me. I was tired and in bed by 11:30pm. Lucky the walk home was short.
Us before the party. My mouth is huge
Salted Caramel chocolate tart
Sunday was drinks with friends in Chippendale at a darling little pub called the Duck Inn.
Our friends M and T have a 5 month old baby who is just the cutest little boy ever. I suppose everyone thinks that of their own kids and/or friends kids, but really he is. I got to play with him while his parents ate their lunch and we had a lot of fun in front of a giant fan. Who knew fans could be so fun! I hear the food there is amazing – it sure did look it (I wasn’t hungry, so didn’t eat).

In other news, my house still shows no signs of the impending Christmas season and to be honest, it probably won’t. I have been really slack to even buy the decorations let alone put them up, so I might just have another ‘no decoration’ year and perhaps try harder to get it done a little earlier next year.

I am currently reading a book called ‘The dog lived (and so will I). I have been reading it for about 2 weeks thinking it was a fiction book. That was until I googled it (I was getting bored and wanted to know the ending) and it is actually a memoir. It’s a good book, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to read it again…or recommend it for that matter. Have you read any good books lately? I need some new books.

Salted Caramel Chocolate tart

I found this recipe on a blog many moons ago (I can't remember who's - if it is yours, please do tell me!). I remember making it when I first saw it and the ganache being too bitter as I used two blocks of Lindt 70% dark chocolate, so this time I changed up the recipe and used some Lindt milk chocolate and Lindt 70% dark chocolate.

The recipe is really easy and perfect if you are whipping it up at the last minute like me. Since I rarely forward-think, I am often looking for last minute ideas for sweets/savouries to take to parties. My neighbour hosted a little Christmas get together with the only request being for everyone to bring a sweet or savoury snack.
You will need:
A sweet pie base (frozen section of coles)
180grams of chocolate
1/4 cup thickened cream
A tin of caramel top and fill (or you can use condensed milk, but I don't know how to make that in to caramel and like I said - I had  little time)
Salt (preferably sea salt)

To make:
- Put your pie base in the oven and cook it for 10 minutes on 180 degrees celcius. I am sure you seasoned bakers would put pie weights, but I however did not.
- Pull it out of the oven and fill it with the whole can of the caramel mix and bake it for a further 30 minutes on 180.
- While that is cooking (and not too soon), prepare your ganache. I use the old two saucepan with hot water trick on the stove top as I don't have a microwave. Mix your chocolate and cream together and mix it until the chocolate has melted. The consistency should be smooth.
- When the caramel has cooked, crack some salt over it (you can choose how much or how little.
- Pour the chocolate over the top and put it in the fridge to set. Mine took about 3 hours, but you can leave it longer.
- When it is set, sprinkle some cocoa over the top and it is done!

I forgot to get a finished product photo, so you will just have to use your imagination. I hear the tart was a hit with everyone!

1, 2, 3 # 5

1.       Not sure about you, but in order to get back on the exercise band wagon I usually need to buy myself some new running gear. Last week was skins! And guess what, I went for one run last week. Not exactly getting back on the bandwagon, but in my defence the 4km run I thought I was doing ended up being 7.2km. I hadn’t run for about 3 months and that 7.2km run has left me sore for a week. Nevertheless, I WILL get back in to it and this time, I won’t run quite so far and try and ease myself back in to it.
Mine are pink

2.      I also bought the Napoleon Ultimate Contour Palette last week in a bid to look a little more put together and less I-just-got-out-of-bed. The first couple of times I used it I saw no difference. After looking at youtube and pinterest, I have found how best to contour my face and I think I am getting better because I got compliments on my makeup yesterday. That’s a success in my books. Still not makeup-artist looking, so I’ll keep my day job.

3.      I am no music person and in fact I prefer to NOT listen to music. I can’t listen at work because I need to concerntrate, I can’t listen on the bus because I like to hear what’s going on around me, I can’t listen when I walk because I like to be on-guard, It has to be below 10 in the car etc etc. In saying that, I do like feel-good music. London Grammar definitely does not fit in to this category and makes me feel flat every time, but I keep going back to it and it has been on repeat this week. I recently discovered Haim who are feel good and pretty funky too. What music do you like to listen to? I get over artists pretty quickly, so I like to have a good stream of new artists coming through… and please don’t tell me Jay-Z or Rihanna because I just can’t get in to that music.

What did Rhi do on the weekend?

My first proper weekend without uni work to do was bliss. S is still studying, so I kept myself busy sewing and watching Orange is the new Black. Has anyone watched that series? It’s good and the episodes are long, so it provides hours of time wasting fun.

S had set up his study resources on the dining room table on Saturday (where I usually sew) and undeterred by my lack of sewing space, I set up a sweat shop in the lounge room. The desk I used is Steve’s sisters (who’s living with us for a couple of months) and sits unused on the front terrace so I re-purposed it as a sewing desk. It was a great idea if I do say so myself because sewing can be pretty boring if you don’t have a tv to watch at the same time. It also allowed my side-kick Teddy to watch and make sure I wasn’t making any errors.
Saturday’s sewing was a pair of shorts that ended up being too small. I didn’t even make it to the hems or waistband and already they were too tight on my legs and bum. I should really have made a practice version first as the material I used was a beautiful DKNY one. Lucky for me I got two metres so I can try again or try and make the first pair a little bigger.
That's a pin in the front..
Teddy got a hair cut on the weekend too...see here - isn't his little bandana cute.
Sundays sewing adventures led me to making a blouse. I had some black and white printed Lisa Ho material that I couldn’t decide whether I’d make a dress or blouse with so I opted for blouse since I hadn’t made one in over a year. It is still a work in progress, but so far so good. Hopefully I get to finish it this week and then I’ll do a proper post on the pattern and blouse itself.

I'm making view C
Sunday afternoon, Steve decided he wanted to play tennis with L (Imogen’s boyfriend), so Imogen and I decided we’d be tennis WAGS and watch with cider, dips and crackers. Ted came with us and tried his best to catch tennis balls through the fence and barked when he couldn’t.
A very relaxing weekend overall – weekends at home every once in a while are good for the soul.
What did you do on the weekend?

Christmas is almost here

Hello friends.

Christmas is well and truly upon us. I was wandering through Harris Farm the other day (that place smells so good) and came across mini potted Christmas trees. I've decided that for our first ever Christmas tree this is what we'll buy since space is a premium in my house and there is honestly not one corner free for a full sized tree. I think I'll buy some mini baubles and lights from Ikea because their lights have little battery boxes that I can hide in the bottom of the pot plant. It will look something like this:
In an effort to get the rest of the house in to the festive season, I might also look for some DIY Christmas decorations to hang around the place. Maybe some tissue paper pom poms, baubles etc. Some ideas I have found:
Not sure of the source
Source - these in red, green, white for the mantle perhaps

Basically, I am keeping it simple, but a little festive since we will be home this year. Speaking of being home - both our families asked us to not go away this year (no problem, we're saving anyway). Now both families are going away. Pay back, I think ha! No biggie though, we can just have a lazy day before we go to dinner together.

Are you decorating your house this year?

Exams are done!

Hello everyone!

Hooray for the end of exams. A sigh of relief and a cheeky Friday night drink and I am well and truly in relax mode on the lead up to Christmas.

I have a list of things to get through in the coming weeks and a couple of weekends to fill as S will be busy studying for his postgrad exams in late December. I plan to get back in to sewing, read more books, go to the beach, decorate my home, blog etc etc.

What have you all been up to?

1, 2, 3 # 4

I haven’t updated the blog much lately for much the same reason I usually drop off the blogging radar - uni and work. I have exams next week, so hopefully after that I jump back on the bandwagon.
Taken by S
1.    I went to my friend’s engagement party on the weekend which was a lot of fun. S and I knew a few people but not heaps and I ended up making a few friends. It’s funny how people connect and when you can tell that you could get along really well with someone, but well they live interstate which makes it hard. It opens my eyes though; making friends doesn’t end as a kid. Friends come and go all the time and that’s just life. I was told at this party that S and I should start making babies as our kids will be cute. Well, yeah they will…no cuter now than when I am actually ready for kids, so let’s hold that thought shall we?
2.    One of my brothers moved to Lightning Ridge today. For those of you who haven’t heard of Lightning Ridge, it is 10 hours away and in the middle of no-where. He is going to work on a farm that is home to 15,000 sheep, wheat and other animals so have fun with that! He won’t be around for Christmas which will be hard for my parents as it’s been a few years since we’ve all been there (my fault!). I suppose that's what happens when all your kids are grown up though.
3.    The other day at work I asked a colleague if someone was pregnant (she obviously was). She wouldn’t tell me and instead started a three way instant message chat and started the conversation by saying ‘Hey, Rhi has to tell you something’. I nearly died and had no idea what she was doing. She went on to say ‘yeah, Rhi thinks you’ve put on weight’ etc etc and I am sitting there thinking omg, she isn’t pregnant, why is this floor not swallowing me right now? Turns out she is pregnant and they were both sitting there laughing at me knowing that I was going bright red and having an almost-heart attack.
P.s - I hate posting blog posts with no pictures, hence the random ones that I stick in there.

From a few weeks ago - Brisbane

A few weeks ago I went up to Brisbane to see my bestie, K. I don't know about you, but I get really emotional at airports. Why? I don't know. I walk through and get the urge to cry almost every time. When I arrived in Brisbane, this was no different. I sat at the 'pickup' area and had tears from families hugging, tears because a dog looked distraught that his owner was leaving and mega tears when a toddler was hysterical because her Mama was going away. I had to put my sunglasses on for fear of people thinking I was a nut job that sat at airports crying. I guess they are not wrong.

To be honest, but I didn't have very high expectations of Brisbane and I was pretty surprised I was wrong. I think I imagined run down, not much happening etc. Well, it is quite the opposite and has many small pockets of areas that each have their own little personality. Case in point, this picture:
This is taken from Southbank. Southbank for those of you who don't know runs along the river and is home to many great restaurants and a man-made beach. Yes, you read right. A man-made pool. 1km from the city....Come on Sydney! ( I suppose we have the ivy pool.......)
Wearing the maroon jeans just like most other times I go out. I really need a new coloured pair of jeans.
A ferris wheel. Permanently...

On the Sunday, we went over to the markets near K's house for crepes and a coffee and a bit of veggie shopping. For small markets, they were really good and had a lot of different things to buy. It seems that most suburbs have little markets on Sundays and it makes me wonder why Sydney only has a few big markets on a Saturday. Afterwards, we drove to more markets to meet up with S's cousins who I hadn't seen in forever. We get along really well, so it was lovely to catch up with them. I got a juice that I thought would cure my thirst but no. This thing had more ginger in it than I need in a whole year. We also went for a drive up to Mount Coot-Tha because when you are in a new place you most certainly need to look at the birds eye view.
Hey look, not wearing maroon jeans and a stripey top!
She's so pretty!
Apart from that, we lazed around at K's house catching up, eating and watching Orange is the new black (my new favourite series). My flight home was only slightly delayed and I did not care one bit because that meant less time at work on Monday!

I am keen to go back to Brisbane ASAP and explore more of the areas I didn't get to see. It is really easy to drive around unlike Sydney and that is always a huge bonus in my books. There are so many different ways to drive in to Brisbane city and that is why I think it is so efficient. Our nav man redirected us like a champ each and every time K missed a turn and you know what, it probably only added 1-2 minutes to the trip each time. I just read this morning that a truck has closed the M5 tunnel in Sydney and I can just imagine what sort of chaos that is causing to all of those people that live South West of the city. Good luck driving to the city today!

1, 2, 3 # 3

totally unrelated photo to this post
1. I am so happy to say that I finished my last ever Uni assignment the other night. I am stoked! The bad news is, when I put together my excel spreadsheet of subjects, I double counted the two subjects I was doing at the time. They were in my completed list AND my 'current' list. So for a year, I thought I was graduating this November. WRONG. When I found out, I was shattered. But it's ok in the end as I have chosen two really easy subjects and will now finish in February. I am even doing a Japanese subject which is of a lot of interest to me, so that's a win. Other than that, I will be spending the next couple of weeks studying for exams so that's going to be fun (not).

2. Christmas is just around the corner people! I am not going away this year (sob), but you know houses don't buy themselves. I am not a huge Christmas lover..stress over who's house to go to, stress over who cooks what, people bitching..it's too much. S and I have decided we'll see the fam during the day and then have a nice dinner together somewhere in the city. Speaking of Christmas, I saw the David Jones Christmas window displays today and there was a teddy bear spanking a horses bum. I'm sure it's not meant to be but well...it is what it is.

3. I am almost but not quite finished Breaking Bad season 5. Ok, I can't stand Walter anymore... how about you? I am assuming most of you have watched the series, so don't tell me what happens (although, I might have looked at wikipedia). I am getting a little bored of the slow pace to be honest, so I hope it gets a bit better soon!

I am adding a four..

4. What do I buy for my Nephew's first birthday that he will actually use/need? I am a terrible gift buyer.

Noosa with K

When I went to visit K in Brisbane, we decided to take a day trip to Noosa as K had been a few times before and absolutely loved it. It’s about a 2 hour drive from Brisbane, but the trip goes really quickly so we hardly noticed it.
As soon as we got there I was surprised at how many bush turkeys there were wandering around. They are harmless and don’t bother you at all and their colours are really beautiful. We wandered down the main road – Hastings Street and found a little café towards the end of the road and we both ordered a coffee and Acai berry with muesli breakfast. The breakfast was fantastic and really cheap. For 2 coffees and 2 breakfasts I only paid $27.

After we walked along the beach admiring the absolutely beautiful views, we found a spot to stick the umbrella in and set up our spot. The main beach at Noosa has a really cool boardwalk that spans the length of the beach, so there’s plenty of spots to settle in for a swim or sunbake or whatever it is you go to the beach for.

Have you been to Noosa?

(Not so) Weekly 1, 2, 3 # 2

I didn't post this last week or the week before, so here's a catch up.

1. I read a lot about Sukin hair products. I read all these reviews about how good it is, it’s so natural yada yada. I bought the shampoo and conditioner and was pretty excited to say the least. No sulfates, sign me up! (what are they, anyway?). the first thing I didn’t like is that it doesn’t lather. Look, I know no sulfates means no lather which turns out to be a no deal for me. The second thing I noticed was my hair was STILL OILY after I dried it. So I tried again. It’s not me, it’s the product. Thirdly, it makes my hair feel like it can’t breathe.
Is it just me, or do other people not like Sukin too?

2. I am thinking of some small business ideas because frankly, my job doesn’t excite me. I’m not sharing anything yet, but if you have been down that path or are heading there then I would love to hear from you!
3. If you follow me on twitter or instagram you would have seen that I cut all my hair off. I went from hair below my boobs, to hair that sits on my shoulders. I had not even been thinking about it. In fact, it was 4pm the day of the cut when I decided to go wild and chop all my hair off. It took me a week to regret it and while I still love the cut, I do miss those long locks. Lucky for me, my hair grows really fast so there will be no issues with growing it back before my wedding like a girl at work mentioned. Um, ok..not even engaged yet!!

What did Rhi do on the weekend # 2

Friday night I got a text on my way home from S. He was telling me he had to stay back at work late (busy period)… naturally, I wondered what I was going to do (because I can’t entertain myself), until I saw D standing in the street on the phone. She was on the phone to her boyfriend who was cancelling plans for the night and so we decided ‘stuff the boys’ and went to Newtown for some drinks. If there is one thing about us and drinking, it’s that we never go easy. On the way up I said ‘we’ll just have a couple’. HA! We started with a bottle of wine and a cheese platter at Black Sheep. One bottle of wine became two and then we decided to head to Social Club for one drink then to Argie Bargee. Neither of the last two were that good to be honest. Quiet and no atmosphere.
Saturday I lazed about the house thinking of all the Uni work I could have been doing and watching Breaking Bad with S. We’re up to Season 4 now and I am glad that they don’t kill Walt yet as I quite like him.
Sunday I was meant to get up early and go and visit my parents, but I slept through my alarm. After a lazy coffee with S, I got my stuff together and headed out to woop-woop where we promptly decided the warm weather warranted a trip to the beach. Just like everyone else without air conditioning! Anyway, we decided the water was too cold after all and went to get fish and chips then for a stroll on the beach…..and to take photos jumping and posing and all those cliché beach shots because that’s what makes my Mum happy.
After all that, I got no Uni work done at all. Helloooo busy week ahead!
How was your weekend?
Don’t forget about my giveaway that ends on Friday!!!

1, 2, 3

1. I booked flights to see my beautiful friend, K in a couple of weeks’ time and I am so excited. K lives in Brisbane and so does Steve’s cousin (and another will be visiting) so I get to visit all three in one weekend. That is really exciting. Hopefully the weather is good so I can check out some beaches as I hear that Queensland has some nice ones. If you have any suggestions on what else to see/do, let me know. One of the cousins, J has been travelling around the US/Canada for the past couple of months and her stories should be pretty great!

2. My little Teddy is not well at the moment. He randomly started acting strangely at 9:30pm on Tuesday night and after taking him to the after-hours vet (he’d eaten a bit of chocolate ¼ of the size of my pinky fingernail) they said he was fine (thank goodness they didn’t charge us). I stayed up all night as he wouldn’t sleep and wanted me to hold him and by morning he had broken out in a rash. He spent the day at the vet, came home and was fine and then the rash came back. He is currently at work with Steve and has been agitated all day but we upped his dose of cortisone so hopefully that kicks in. Did you know you can give dog’s benedryl? I read it online but was told not to give Ted any by the vet as Schnauzers can get gastrointestinal problems.

3. My little Nephew turns one next month. Tell me when THAT happened!? I wish I got to see them more often, but life is life and we’re all busy and they live over an hour away. An hour and a half with the M5 ‘road works’. Anyway, I have Uni exams the week of his first birthday and might not be able to make it to his first birthday party. I feel SO guilty, but they are pretty much my last uni exams ever and I don’t want to fail. What to do, what to do?

*I don't know if you've heard of Happy Lab and if you haven't, go now! I am munching on a box of lollies as I type this.

To Harvey, K and C

One of my beautiful best friends got a beautiful little Labrador puppy a few months ago after she moved to Brisbane. Harvey; as they named him, was a beautiful little boy. He stole K and her boyfriend C’s heart right from the minute they met him.

In fact, the day I received the picture of the little pup I knew he was the right one for them. Harvey knew, too. A new addition to their lives that they would love endlessly and adore.
Harvey passed puppy pre-school with flying colours and I was told many times how happy K and C were with Harvey. He would follow them around, chew like puppies do and even skyped me with K on one occasion.
The day they picked him up
Two weeks ago, Harvey was in a tragic accident where he fell off a ute (collar snapped) and his lung collapsed. The day I received the text message from K, my heart and stomach sank. How does that happen to such a small puppy who had so much life ahead of him. K told me the vet had said that Harvey was looking up. His health was getting better and he would be home on Friday. Unfortunately, the next day Harvey’s health deteriorated. He got worse and K and C were asked to come in to say goodbye. K messaged me again and again my heart and stomach sank. How does this happen to such a beautiful puppy?
It was no-one’s fault that Harvey was hurt. No-one could foresee such a tragic accident happening to such loving, caring people. K and C, I love you both dearly and hope you aren’t blaming yourselves. Harvey knew he was and is still very loved and you both did the absolute best for that little boy.

Rest in peace, little Harvey. You can play with Sheba now.
